When Your Subconscious Is Winning the Battle
Most people think they are in control of their choices.
They believe they are making decisions with their conscious mind.
But in reality?
Only about 5 percent of what you do is conscious. The other 95 percent is subconscious.
That means if your subconscious is carrying old beliefs like “I am not enough,” “I am not safe,” or “I have to keep everyone happy,” then those beliefs are steering the ship.
And you can feel it, even if you do not always see it.
The Iceberg Effect
Think of your mind like an iceberg. The conscious part is the tip you see above the water. That is the part that says, I am fine. I can handle this. I know what I am doing.
But under the surface, the subconscious holds the bulk of it. That is where your old stories, survival strategies, and hidden fears live.
And when what is above the water and what is below do not match, it creates a struggle.
You can say to yourself, I am confident, but if the subconscious is whispering you are not good enough, the whisper wins.
You can tell yourself, I am safe, but if the subconscious is running “stay alert, danger is coming”, your body will tense, your mind will spiral, and your choices will reflect fear, not freedom.
My Story of Survival Disguised as Freedom
When I left toxic relationships, I told myself I was ok.
I was free.
I was out.
But the truth is, I was not free inside.
For nearly 20 years, I lived in survival mode. I put the mask firmly on everyday. I showed up strong, capable and supportive. I was the person who had it all together.
But underneath, I was still holding the same beliefs that kept me stuck in the first place.
- That I had to be the strong one.
- That I could not stop or everything would fall apart.
- That my value came from supporting others, not myself.
So yes, I had left the relationships. But the relationships had not left me. They were still alive in my subconscious.
And because of that, I was attracting more of what I did not want. I pulled in people who mirrored my wounds, not my worth. My family lived with a version of me that was disconnected and drained.
That is how powerful the subconscious is.
The Signs Your Subconscious Is Running the Show
You may not always spot it straight away. But the signs are there.
- You keep attracting the same kind of relationships, even when you swear you will not.
- You overthink decisions until you are paralysed, then beat yourself up for not doing enough.
- You feel like you are coping, but underneath you are exhausted.
- You tell yourself you are happy, but you know something is missing.
- You feel pulled in ten directions, and no amount of self-care ever feels like enough.
If any of this feels familiar, it is not because you are broken. It is because your subconscious beliefs are the ones driving without your permission.
Why Positive Thinking Alone Does Not Work
Now I am a big believer of affirmations but on their own and “just think positive” advice will often fall flat.
You can stand in the mirror and say, I am amazing, but if your subconscious is still wired to believe, I am not worthy, your nervous system just will not buy it.
It is not that affirmations are useless. They do help to retrain your brain. But on their own, they skim the surface and keep you afloat.
But to make a real shift, you need to go deeper. You need to uncover what your subconscious is holding on to and decide if those beliefs are still true.
Client Stories of Change
I have seen this play out with so many clients.
One came to me convinced she would never have a healthy relationship. Her conscious mind said she wanted one. But her subconscious held the belief that relationships meant pain. Every time someone got close, she sabotaged it.
Through our work, she uncovered the root of that belief, saw where it came from, and shifted it. The moment she rewired that story, her choices changed. She stopped running. She started opening up. And she attracted people who could actually meet her needs.
Another client believed she was lazy because she struggled with consistency. But what sat underneath was the belief that no matter what she did, it would never be enough. So why bother? Once she shifted that subconscious belief, she found energy she did not know she had.
This is the difference between living from the 5 percent and living from the 95 percent.
Reflective Prompts for You
Take a quiet moment and ask yourself:
- What am I telling myself I am fine about when I know I am not?
- Where do I feel like I am repeating the same patterns, even when I want something different?
- What would change if my inner beliefs actually supported me instead of sabotaging me?
- If my subconscious matched my conscious desires, how would my life feel?
Write the answers down. Do not edit them. Let them show you where your subconscious might be steering.
How to Bring the Subconscious Into the Light
The good news is, your subconscious is not set in stone. What was wired in can be rewired.
Here are three simple ways to start:
- Notice your reactions. When you feel triggered, pause. Ask yourself, What belief is underneath this reaction?
- Use continued writing. Write a prompt like I cannot say no because… and keep writing without stopping. You will be surprised what comes out.
- Challenge the evidence. When your subconscious says you are not enough, ask, Is this true right now? What evidence proves the opposite?
These steps shine a light into the subconscious. And once you see the belief, you can decide if it still belongs.
Your Next Step
Your subconscious will always be stronger than your conscious unless you do the work to align them.
If you are tired of repeating the same patterns, of saying one thing and living another, it is time to go deeper.
This is exactly what we do in my 121 coaching. We uncover the beliefs that are running the show, reprogramme them, and replace them with ones that actually support you.
Because you deserve more than survival. You deserve a life that feels steady, safe, and joyful.
And that begins the moment you choose to say yes to yourself.
